In our program, we believe that mathematical confidence is a confidence that a child takes into EVERYTHING else in their life. Want to have a little more courage when faced with a challenge; want to figure out why the same trends keep occurring, how about

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving:

Widely known that math develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are invaluable in various aspects of life.

Patience and Delayed Gratification:

One of the most important predictors of success in life, the ability to delay gratification. Which in a single example is a calculation; “should I eat now or later?”

Math Class vs Math Tutoring:

In consulting, our goal was to consult our way out of the job/project; tutoring should operate off of the same principle. Permanent tutoring sessions are a new math class altogether. The goal is to get the student(s) to go back to the regular class and the class pace.

Rite of Passage:

Ask them for their explanation after learning a new topic, or approach. You know it when you can teach it. This approach makes for a systemic process of assessing if the necessary foundational math base is in place or not. A speed and ability level for arithmetic is needed to be able to learn, practice and complete pre-algebra concepts in a positively reinforcing manner.
